VE Day 75th Anniversary

Every year, we all pause to remember those who fought in the Second World War, or were affected by it.

Over the weekend of 8 - 10 May, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day when World War 2 came to an end in Europe. We would have normally marked with events, street parties and gatherings alongside our friends, family and communities. With the current measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus asking us all to stay at home, people across the country will be remembering and giving thanks to the Second World War generation from the safety of their own homes.

There are still lots of ways you can get involved and show your support in marking the day.

To help you prepare your day, a dedicated Get Involved website contains lots of VE Day related resources such as recipes, a playlist and educational resources, aimed at Key Stages 2, 3 & 4, exploring the significance of VE Day.

Why not get creative and use our specially designed ‘Great British Bunting to hang in your windows. Bunting can be decorated with pictures of soldiers who fought on the frontline or those who worked on the Homefront, it could be your grandad in the Navy or your great grandmother who worked for the RAF. Or you could draw a poppy to commemorate the fallen, a dove to celebrate lasting peace or a rainbow to symbolise hope. The BBC has more guidance and inspiration you need to make your bunting from whatever you have at home.

Also check this weeks home learning as your teachers may have set VE Day activities for you to do.

School Crossing Patrol Sponsored by Local Business

Long Lane School Crossing Patrol is supported by two local businesses so pupils are able to get to school in safety. The school crossing patrol funding was removed in April 2016 by West Berkshire’s as part of  funding cuts to services. On Monday 29th April the generous sponsors were invited in to school to meet Mr Kim Darling, the School Crossing patroller, and the school’s Pupil Council.

Mr Thorne said “The sponsorship each year comes as a huge relief to the school. We could not afford to fund the patrol ourselves with budget constraints. We are however very pleased and amazed that there are such kind and wonderful people that are willing to support our community. I can’t thank them enough.”

Local firm Wilmott’s were only too happy to help. Scott Willmott said,

"I am a parent with young children at the school, my family cross the busy road every day and I can't imagine what it would be like without Mr Darling helping them. As a family business, we are proud to have been sponsoring Long Lane's lollipop man for the last 3 years and once again this year."

Paul Bampton, Managing director of Sansome and George and parent of two at the school, was also very keen to offer his support.

“At Sansome & George we take immense pride in supporting the local community especially Long Lane School. We are pleased to have helped maintain the safety for the children and their parents travelling to and from the school since April 2016.”

Parent Governor Vacancy - Make a difference

The Role of the Parent Governor plays a vital role on the Governing Board, holding the unique position of having a parental viewpoint of the school. Through the children, they have first hand experience of the delivery of the curriculum, and how the school is perceived from the ‘consumers’ point of view. This enables parent governors to bring a different perspective to the strategic management of the school. It is important for parent governors to establish a rapport with the parental body which elected him/her, whilst continuing to maintain a strategic approach to school governance. Although being available to advise parents on appropriate routes of action it is vital that parent governors do not personally become involved in individual concerns. Please see the following documrnt for more details of role and how to apply - Parent Governor.pdf

2018 Year 5 & 6 Victorian Day

On Thursday 8th February Years 5 & 6 spent the whole day as Victorian Children. A "really" Victorian teacher visited each class and talked about what it was like to live in Victorian times. The children practised handwriting, tried gruel and played Victorian games. Anyone making a mistake or not following instructions had to stand facing the wall wearing the dunce's hat!!
